“After a week of fighting by a Muslim separatist, splinter group, our community still huddles in fear. 160 families of refugees are clustered in and around our school and won’t leave. The military lobs 105 howitzer rounds at the rebels around the clock, and beheaded and mutilated soldiers continue to be found. Our staff is trying to meet the pressing needs of this crisis. We are literally, the hands and feet of Christ to these people. No one else has shown up with food. Yesterday we fed 30 families. Today a few more. Tomorrow we have enough money to feed about 90 families…but that is only for two meals and that is only about half the refugees. Please consider helping us by making a donation that will impact lives in real time.” -The Mcintosh Family, who run the PGC foundation.
These are the words of some close friends of my family, they are also veteran missionaries who have been caring for the Philippine people for around 25 years. They are working in a school in Davao, Mindanao. Right now people are being shot down all around them. An eight-months-pregnant woman accompanying them went into shock a few hours ago, and is now in labour. They have very little food, and what with all the flooding and massacring bringing on waves of more desperate people, it may very well be gone by now.
Right now Mindanao’s people are fighting for peace in their small country. We as humans cannot always guarantee what the other is going to do, but we can make a choice of giving someone peace with the promise of their next meal. You don’t have to give very much, you don’t even have to give to this particular organization. Give for relief, give for faith, give for equality, give for protection. Whatever this effort would mean to you, you would be offering a hand up, solidarity with your fellow human beings in a time of crisis. While the floods in the Philippines happened and were well known, what wasn’t noted that happened during the same time were the attacks in Mindanao. For our Muslim brothers and sisters in Mindanao, Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. ♥
